A homegrown family business.

Mert’s Specialty Meats is owned and operated by Mert Prescott, Shirley Decker Prescott and their son Brandon Decker. Together, Mert, Brandon and Shirley offer a combined 100 years of retail experience.

They have two stores – the Okemos store is located at 1870 W. Grand River Avenue and the Lansing location is at 1629 E. Michigan Avenue, on the corner of Marshall St.

Mert Prescott first learned the meat market trade as he worked at his family meat processing plant in mid-Michigan. His grandfathers owned a meat packing plant in Stockbridge, and they shipped bacon and hams all across the nation. Mert then went on to work as a butcher for both national and independent retail stores in the Greater Lansing area, including L&L Food Centers and Goff Food Stores. Over the years, Mert has developed a large following of customers who ask for him by name. That’s because shoppers trust that Mert will give them a quality product at the best possible price. Mert offers a wealth of knowledge about the entire butchering process, from the best cuts of meat to maintaining a friendly and safe environment.

Brandon Decker has been working in a retail environment since he was 11 years old. He started off as an entry level service clerk at Goff Food Stores. Brandon has experience in almost every retail grocery store department. Several years ago, Brandon switched to the wholesale side of the grocery industry. He taps into his many years of experience to work with vendors and suppliers of Mert’s Specialty Meats.   Today Brandon is the force that keeps Mert’s fresh and up to date with new products that he personally develops.  His quality standards are passed onto all of the meat cutters and front end personnel each and every day.

Shirley Decker Prescott is the key owner of Mert’s Specialty Meats. She comes armed with extensive experience in the retail industry, from running a department to heading an entire Goff Food Store with over 160 employees. Over the years, Shirley has built a network of contacts in the wholesale community—the vendors that supply Mert’s Specialty Meats.  She is well known in the local and state-wide youth hockey community, having volunteered 25 years for GLAHA, Michigan Amateur Hockey, and USA Hockey.

As a tight-knit family business, Mert’s Specialty Meats forms long-lasting relationships with our customers and the entire community. From the moment you walk into our market’s doors, we will greet you with warmth and kindness and treat you like part of the family. You simply will not find this level of friendly expertise and commitment at a big box store.
